Engineering for safety in air and space Safety engineering is strongly related to industrial engineering and the subset System Safety Engineering. Safety engineering assures that a life-critical system behaves as needed even when components fail. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers degrees on Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering that include Aviation Safety Engineer (ASE). The relationship between air safety, space, and engineering, is crucial with the introduction of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) which, among other things, will transform America’s air traffic control system into a satellite-based system. GPS technology will be used to permit controllers to monitor and manage aircraft with greater safety margins.
